Residence internet: mostly included, with four exceptions
Every student living in a University of Alberta residence gets free wireless internet, through the ResNet network in most buildings, which you join with your CCID and password [1]. Wired ResNet exists in nine named buildings, including Lister, Peter Lougheed Hall, Pinecrest House and Tamarack House, and you bring your own Cat6 cable [1]. At Aspen House and Maple House, the rent includes wireless internet, heat, water and power [3].
The exceptions are Marge's House, Elsey's House, Theme Community House and the fraternities and sororities. There, you pick and sign up with an internet provider yourself and pay whatever it charges [1]. If you're headed to one of those four, this site applies to you from day one.
The calendar: check-in dates and contract lengths
Fall 2026 North Campus check-in ran over two days: Monday, August 24 for Lister, Alder/Linden House and Peter Lougheed Hall, and Wednesday, August 26 for Aspen/Maple House, HUB, Graduate Residence, International House, Nîpisîy House and Pinecrest/Tamarack House [2].
The shared units at Aspen and Maple run on 8-month contracts for Fall/Winter, with 2 to 4-month contracts in Spring/Summer, while the 1-bedroom apartments there are month to month [3]. So the date you leave residence is set by your contract, which is when you need your own account.
Off campus: Garneau, Whyte Avenue and what to ask first
The university describes one of its walk-up residences as surrounded by Garneau's neighbourhood [4], and calls Whyte Avenue just steps from North Campus [5]. Those are the two areas it points to around campus. Edmonton's cable network is Rogers, which absorbed Shaw (founded in Edmonton in 1966) on April 3, 2023 [7, 8]. oxio rents Rogers West, the network running from British Columbia to Manitoba [9]. Which provider reaches your building still depends on the exact address, so check it before you plan around anyone.
The university tells off-campus students to arrive at least two weeks to a month before classes start, to read every lease term, and to budget utilities and internet as separate costs [6]. Our tip: ask your landlord in writing whether internet is in the rent before you sign anything. If it isn't, oxio has no term contract and $0 activation, installation and shipping with the modem included [10], so an 8-month situation doesn't leave you paying for a contract you can't use.
