Residence internet at UBC Vancouver: it depends on the building

UBC says ResNet is included in your room fees, with no extra charge to get connected, for anyone living in a residence it supports [1]. What differs is how it reaches you. Wired-only buildings include Fairview Crescent, Green College, Iona House, Marine Drive, MBA House, Ponderosa Commons, St. Andrews and Thunderbird [1]. Wireless-only buildings include Brock Commons, Exchange, Fraser Hall, Orchard Commons, Place Vanier, Ritsumeikan-UBC House, Saltwater, Totem Park and Walter Gage [1].

In the wired buildings, each room has hardwired ports, but the Ethernet cable is not included, so you bring your own [1]. UBC Wireless in those buildings is listed for the commonsblock only [2]. Our tip: if you're assigned to a wired building, buy the cable before move-in so your first night isn't spent tethered to a hallway.

Acadia Park is the exception worth checking

UBC's building list shows Acadia Park's internet access as Shaw/Telus, with UBC Wireless in the commonsblock only [2]. That is the one entry on the list that doesn't say ResNet. Because it is listed as a Shaw/Telus setup, ask the housing office before you move in whether your suite's internet is already arranged or whether you set it up yourself.

Shaw's cable business is now part of Rogers, which completed its takeover on April 3, 2023 [5]. oxio rents Rogers West in British Columbia [6]. If you do need your own account, oxio's activation, installation and shipping are $0, with the modem included [7].

Off campus: what UBC tells students to budget and ask

UBC's graduate-student guide names Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, West Point Grey, Dunbar/Southlands, Arbutus Ridge and Kerrisdale as West Side areas, and says rents there are a bit higher but the commute is shorter [3]. It says Commercial Drive is 35 to 40 minutes from campus by bus [3]. It tells students to budget for utilities and wifi on top of rent [3], and to ask the landlord whether wifi is included [4].

BC law specifies 30 days' notice to vacate, normally given on the last day of the month to leave by the end of the next one [3, 4]. So a September move-out means telling your landlord by the end of August. Ask the wifi question in writing before you sign, and if the answer is no, remember oxio has no term contract to line up with that notice date [7].
